i have taken vo several workshops and worked with producers en route to making my vo demo. however, i have been told by several working vo actors not to spend the money on a demo (not a true representation of talent) and to spend my money on classes/workshops that can send me to auditions (they advised to make a demo only with actual work on it). any thoughts/advice?

I realize this post is way, way after the fact, but maybe it will be helpful to someone.

You have to have a demo to even start auditioning, and you certainly need to have one to get an agent to represent you.

Although I've been a professional voice over talent and actress for many years and use actual work to create my demos now, I had to start somewhere! The first demo I made was with the help of an audio engineer and some other helpful vo talent who provided some actual copy. The engineer directed me and we did a variety of types of reads. After the voice session, he spent several hours producing the demo with sound effects and music to make it sound like actual spots.

You may be able to find an engineer to help, a voice over coach especially if you're already taking classes or there are some studios that specialize in creating demos, but whatever you do, make sure that first demo is well produced and sounds like the real deal - not "homemade"!

For more tips and Voice Over Advice visit my web site and blog. Since I've received so many emails from prospective voice over talent, I decided to include as much information for them as I could on both. You'll find them below in my signature. Good Luck!
